So today I realized that being short has a lot of obstacles for me... so I thought you should all know what it is like in the world of a short person. Here we go.
First, in the morning, I cannot always reach the things on the top shelf when getting ready, so I have to stand on my tippy toes, sometimes this does not always work. and sadly, in the dorm, there are a lot of top shelves. This is restricting on my storage area.
Second, when I go to the cafe in the morning for breakfast or even anytime of day, I cannot reach the drinks on the top shelf, and that includes my fav, OJ. so tippy toes again.
Next, we have the cafeteria, where I cannot always reach the food in the salad bar, or on the counter. The cups are in a basket and I have a very hard time reaching for those. and I am constantly lifting my arm up to grap things, shoulder damage? I think so.
Everyday, everywhere I go. I have the problem of not being able to reach the floor when I am sitting properly in a chair. This has lead to serious posture problems, and a lot of people find this hilarious. I do not.
I work in the library and there are always issues of reaching things on the shelves. Good thing there are foot stools everywhere for easy access for me.
Beyond the college life, here are some other examples of problems:
1.) shopping. Who ever thought it was important to put things about 5 foot on shelves? Yeah shopping can always be very interesting to find something on the top shelf and not be able to reach it. I have asked for help before, which is less embarrassing than trying to reach for it and knocking things over... yep.
2.) in the car, my car is special and has adjustable pedals and seat, so I cannot complain too much, but I fear that when I get a new car, I will literally have to put wooden blocks on the pedals and sit on a phone book. Thank goodness friends have already offered the phone book part lol
3.) in the kitchen, when I have to cook or anything, that is just an adventure. If I had a penny every time I had to climb up on the counter (literally) to get something on the top shelf or get something down... I could pay a lot of my school tuition. yeah...
4.) laundry can sometimes be interesting because I cannot always reach to the bottom of the washer to grab that last sock. I have to climb up over the edge (scary sometimes) to get that last sock.
So, next time you are feeling low on your life, read this blog, and think about the challenges that I go through everyday because of my short disability.
peace.
I feel your pain. The kitchen thing....yea. At work I have to climb into the cabinet things to reach up to put stuff away.
